Lion's mane: fruiting body or mycelium?

Lion's mane: fruiting body or mycelium?

Lion's mane products are made from either the fruiting body (the mushroom you can see and pick) or the mycelium (the root-like network), usually grown on grain. The two contain different compounds, but both are sold as 'lion's mane'.

Why it matters

Mycelium grown on grain is harvested together with the grain, so the powder can be mostly starch. Fruiting body products avoid that. Read the label for the words 'fruiting body' and ask for a beta-glucan test.

Where it comes from

Most lion's mane on the market is grown in China. Demand for lion's mane and turkey tail is outrunning quality supply, which makes them targets for adulteration.

What we use

An organic fruiting body extract from Nammex, a British Columbia company. The mushrooms are grown organically in China. We're setting up our own grow room, and we'll film every step.
